The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Zonaria tournefortii (J.V.Lamouroux) Montagne.

Nomenclatural note
According to De Clerck (2003), this is an illegitimate name for Fucus tournefortii Lamouroux (1805: 44-17, pl. 26, fig. 1). Nothing prevented Lamouroux from using the epithet tournefortiana and hence the change to tournefortii was unwarranted. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
