Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Akashiwo sanguinea (K.Hirasaka) Gert Hansen & Moestrup.

Type Information
Type locality: "Kozusa-ura, an inlet of the Gokasho Bay, near the entrance of the Gulf of Ise" [actually Konsa-ura, Gokasho Bay, Mie Prefecture,Japan]; (Faust & Gulledge 2002: 43) Notes: "About the type locality, "Kozusa-ura" is a misreading of Chinese characters by Hirasaka (1922). The correct place name is "Konsa-ura". (Masahiro Suzuki pers. comm. July 2024).

Adjective (Latin), blood-red (Stearn 1983).
