Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Akashiwo sanguinea (K.Hirasaka) Gert Hansen & Moestrup
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), blood-red (Stearn 1973).
