Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Nitzschia is Nitzschia elongata Hassal.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Psammodictyon mediterraneum (Hustedt) D.G.Mann.

Type locality: "Neapel" [Naples, Italy]; (Simonsen 1987: 57) Lectotype (designated by Simonsen 1987: 57) : BRM; Hustedt N10/12 (Simonsen 1987: 57) Notes: "The taxon is not marked or named. Several valves were found on the following slide which was made with material from Reichelt and may here serve as lectotype: N10/12. Neapel. 60 m. Specimens were found at finder positions 373-2-3, 379-1, 585-1."

Adjective (Latin), Mediterranean Sea (Stearn 1973).
