Discovery Bay, Jamaica, W.I.; Florida Keys, Florida; intracellular symbiont from the jellyfishes Cassiopeia xamachana and C. frondosa (Trench & Blank, 1987:479).

Description
Small, photosynthetic marine dinoflagellates common as intra- or intercellular symbiontsin broad diversity of metazoan and protozoan hosts; cell color light (golden) brown, reddish-brown, to greenish-brown (ochraceous); life cycle alternates between predominant coccoid (metabolically activevegetative cells) phase and transient motile (mastigote) phase. Coccoid cells spherical to broadly ellipsoidal and possess continuous, often smooth, cellwall of varying thickness underlain by series of membranes (the amphisema); mean cell length 6–13 µm; karyokinesis and cytokinesis occur only incoccoid phase; karyokenesis completed beforecytokinesis. Single chloroplast is largest intracellular structure, multi-lobed, branched, and per ipheral.Size, shape, and degree of reticulation of chloroplast lobes vary considerably among members of the genus. Thylakoids stacked in groups of three, arranged in parallel arrays only, or with parallel andperipheral orientations; pyrenoid single, bulbous (circular), attached to inner surface of chloroplastby one or more stalks, typically surrounded by cap of starch and enclosed by triple-layered chloroplast envelope; pyrenoid contents granular and not penetrated by thylakoids. Coccoid cells sometimes withlarge amorphous, deep orange-amber, accumulation body, but typically absent from motile cells. Mitochondria one or more, ovoid or reticulate. Cytoplasm with numerous calcium oxalate crystals in vacuoles, lipid droplets, fibrous bodies, and other unidenti?ed vesicles. Motile cells with gymnodinioid morphology;hyposome smaller than, or equal size to episome.Longitudinal flagellum without flagellar hairs, trans-verse ?agellum ribbon-like. Outer morphology ofmotile cell with seven latitudinal series of amphiesmalvesicles: apical (1), intercalary (1), precingular (1), cingulular (2), postcingular (1), and antapical (1) plate rows. Sulcal series formed by numerous platessurrounding central plate perforated by two flagellar pores and peduncle arising between them. Typical dinoflagellate amphiesma consisting of outer membrane, thecal vesicles, and thecal plates; microtubules located beneath thecal vesicles and above peripheral vacuolar system. Motile cells possess "type E" eyespot adjacent to the sulcus grove. Motile cells produced with characteristic diurnal rhythm when proliferating in fresh culture media.
