The type species (lectotype) of the genus Amphora is Amphora ovalis (Kützing) Kützing.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Amphora subconstricta Levkov.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), oval, elliptical, i.e., broadest at the middle, the sides curved and length:breadth generally 2:1 (Stearn 1973).
