Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Amphidinium is Amphidinium operculatum Claparède & Lachmann.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Prosoaulax lacustris (F.Stein) Calado & Moestrup.

Type locality: Lake Wolschauer near Prague; (Calado & Moestrup: 112) Lectotype: Freshwater; (Calado & Moestrup: 113) Notes: Lectotype: figure 21 in Stein's (1883) pl. 17 is designated as the lectotype.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), inhabiting lakes (Stearn 1983).
