Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Amphidinium is Amphidinium operculatum Claparède & Lachmann.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ankistrodinium semilunatum (Herdman) Hoppenrath, Sh.Murray, Sparmann & Leander.
