Nomenclatural note
Ceratoperidinium R.Margalef, Invest. Pesq. 33: 351. Jan 1969 was invalid as it lacked a Latin diagnosis. It was validated by A.R.Loeblich III (1980). Gómez et al. (2004) noted that Margalef (1969) described C. yeye from a single individual but did not give a Latin diagnosis. Loeblich (1980) added a Latin diagnosis but instead of retaining the name with a new authority, C. yeye Margalef ex Loeblich III, he proposed the new name C. margalefii Loeblich III. According to Gómez, under the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (Greuter et al. 2000: article 45.5 ex. 5, names published under the Zoological Code), the name should retain its original authorship and date. This is incorrect as there is no indication in the Margalef (1969) paper ("Composición específica del fitoplancton...") that he was proposing the name under the Zoological Code. Accordingly, the name remains invalid but was validated as Ceratoperidinium margalefii by A.R.Loeblich III. - (08 November 2006) - M.D. Guiry

Distributional note
Specimens were collected during two cruises: (1) in the Celebes, Sulu and South China Sea; (2) along the equator from 160ºE to 160ºW (Gomez et al., 2004). - (08 November 2006) - G.M. Guiry
