Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gyrodinium is Gyrodinium spirale (Bergh) Kofoid & Swezy.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Balechina gracilis (Bergh) F.Gómez, Artigas & Gast.
