Nomenclatural note
Although the species name Merismopedia warmingiana is attributed solely to Lagerheim (1883: 41) the entry on this page is "Merismopedia hyalina subsp. warmingiana Lagerheim" and the name was not treated as a species until later. Taxonomic note
"There are a group Merismopedia species with small cells from temperate and tropical areas which are often misidentified or confused with one another (i.e. M. africana Komárek & Cronberg (2001: 137), M. tenuissima, M. warmingiana). The original descriptions are often brief and characterization of the type location habitat is inadequate. McGregor et al. (2007) reported small-celled colonies from north-eastern Australia as M. warmingiana, however this is a marine species with few-celled colonies that easily disintegrate (Joosten 2006). Merismopedia minutissima is a common constituent of cyanobacterial blooms in eutrophic lakes and reservoirs." (McGregor 2013: 46). - (27 May 2014) - M.D. Guiry
