Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

Status of Name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type Information
Type locality: Latvia: Prov. Vidzeme, in brackischen Küstentümpelen Rigaschen Meerbusens; (Skuja 1939: 47) Notes: According to Thessen, Patterson & Murray (2012: 16), "This species was described by Skuja from brackish water in the Gulf of Riga, Spain". The type locality is in fact in the Gulf of Riga, Latvia.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), pale, sallow, yellow-green, grey-green (Smith & Lockwood 1933).

General Environment
This is a freshwater species.
