Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Peridinium is Peridinium cinctum (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Diplopsalopsis orbicularis (Paulsen) Meunier.

Type Information
Syntype localities: "I have seen this species repeatedly in single specimens in the Danish waters and in Valencia harbour (Ireland). Besides, I have seen figures by VAN BREEMEN, representing specimens from the southwestern North Sea."; (Paulsen 1907: 12) Notes: The Valencia Harbour specimens are those in the figure.
