Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Amphidinium is Amphidinium operculatum Claparède & Lachmann.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Prosoaulax lacustris (F.Stein) Calado & Moestrup.

Source of Synonymy
Calado, A.J. & Moestrup, Ø. (2005). On the freshwater dinoflagelllates presently included in the genus Amphidinium, with a description of Prosoaulax gen. nov. Phycologia 44: 112-119.

Type locality: "Experimental tubs at the University Botanic Garden, Reading (eutrophic), with abundant, Volvocales ; found at all seasons." [Berkshire, England]; (Harris 1940: 19)
