Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gymnodinium triceratium Skuja.

Type Information
Type locality: "This species is common in winter and spring in peaty lakes, pools, and ditches : it was noticed in water from similar pools in the Lake District." [England]; (Harris 1940: 9)

This is a freshwater species.
