The type species (holotype) of the genus Peridinium is Peridinium cinctum (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Peridiniopsis pygmaea var. brigantina (Er.Lindemann) Moestrup & Calado.

Adjective (Latin), pygmy, dwarf (Stearn 1973).
