The type species (holotype) of the genus Petalomonas is Petalomonas abscissa (Dujardin) F.Stein.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Notosolenus steinii (G.A.Klebs) Schroeckh, Won J.Lee & D.J.Patterson.
