The type species (holotype) of the genus Protogonyaulax is Protogonyaulax tamarensis (Lebour) F.J.R.Taylor.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Alexandrium ostenfeldii (Paulsen) Balech & Tangen.
