The type species (holotype) of the genus Zygnema is Zygnema cruciatum (Vaucher) C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Spirogyra varians (Hassall) Kützing.

Type locality: Cheshunt and its vicinity: Hassall. At Hawkhurst; in a pond in cottage garden between Broomhill and Speldhurst; by road-side near Blackboy's toll gate: Jenner. Graham Castle: Major Martin; (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: [in 1843: 431, in the vicinity of Cheshunt, Britain (INA)]. Above data published in 1845.
