The type species (lectotype) of the genus Acrochaetium is Acrochaetium secundatum (Lyngbye) Nägeli.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Acrochaetium catenulatum M.Howe.

Taxonomic note
Stegenga (1985) and Stegenga et al. (1997) considered that A. denusum (Rhodochorton densum) and A. catenulatum were phases in the same life history.
Garbary (1987: 58) list a synonymy between this species and Audouinella densa (Levring) Garbary (1979) - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
