The type species (holotype) of the genus Thalassiosira is Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii Cleve.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Shionodiscus gracilis var. expectus (VanLandingham) A.J.Alverson, S.H.Kang & E.C.Theriot.
