Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Tetraselmis is Tetraselmis cordiformis (H.J.Carter) F.Stein.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Tetraselmis verrucosa f. rubens (Butcher) Hori, Norris & Chihara.
