The type species (holotype) of the genus Nitzschia is Nitzschia elongata Hassal.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Nitzschia terrestris (J.B.Petersen) Hustedt.

Adjective (Latin), worm-shaped, almost cylindrical and bent in places, marked with irregular waves or bent lines (Stearn 1973).
