The type species (holotype) of the genus Nitzschia is Nitzschia elongata Hassal.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Nitzschia perminuta Grunow.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective B (Latin), pertaining to winter, also "hyemalis" (Stearn 1973).
