The type species (lectotype) of the genus Grateloupia is Grateloupia filicina (J.V.Lamouroux) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dermocorynus dichotomus (J.Agardh) Gargiulo, Morabito & Manghisi.

(2013) is labelled "St. Hospice, 1841" , probably Golfe de Saint-Hospice near Nice. Collector: Risso; Giraudi; Solier (INA).

Adjective (Latin), dichotomous, having divisions always in pairs (Stearn 1983).
