Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), with a knob-like head or tip (Stearn 1983).

General Environment
This is a freshwater species.

Description
The valves are narrowly elliptical with subcapitate poles (these are more strongly capitate in larger valves), 19-44 µm long and 7.2-8.2 µm wide. the axial area is narrow and straight, and the raphe appears as a straight line in LM or very slightly undulate. The central area is a bow-tie-shaped subfascia; its outline is somewhat irregular, as a result of the presence of approximately alternate long and short striae. The areolae cannot be resolved in LM, but are ± circular or elliptical and equally spaced poroids, with a density of 62 in 10 µm transapically. Figurtes 41, 42 show a valve that has not been significantly eroded or dissolved during specimen preparation and storage. As a result, the small domed hymenes are still visible at the inner apertures of the poroids. The striae are mostly radiate, becoming parallel near the poles, with a density of 16.2-22.3 in 10µm; many striae terminate in one or a few larger poroids at the axial area. The polar bars are relatively more distant from the apex than in S. blackfordensis and are perpendicular to the raphe. The raphe-sternum is flush with the valve face near the poles, but slightly elevated near the centre. The raphe appears simple in LM and is slightly undulate and threadlike. The external central raphe endings are expanded and deflected towards the primary side; the internal endings are also deflected towards the primary side. Above the helictoglossa, which is narrow and elongate, the terminal fissure is abruptly bent towards the secondary side.
