The type species (holotype) of the genus Botryocladia is Gastroclonium uvarium (J.A.Murray) Kützing.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Irvinea boergesenii (Feldmann) R.J.Wilkes, L.M.McIvor & Guiry.
