The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota dichotoma var. intricata (C.Agardh) Greville.

type locality: Trieste, Italy; (De Clerck 2003: 160) Lectotype: L; 936.262-239 (De Clerck 2003: 160) Notes: According to De Clerck (2003), the lectotype of D. vulgare is extremely slender and spirally twisted, unlike the specimen illustrated by Kützing in his later work (1859: 6, pl. 10, fig. 2). Lectotypification is established by De Clerck (2003).
