The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota dichotoma var. intricata (C.Agardh) Greville.

Type locality: [Dalmatia], Mediterranean Sea; (De Clerck 2003: 162) Holotype: MEL; 537253 (De Clerck 2003: 162) Notes: De Clerck (2003) notes that Nizamudden (1981: 49) designated a specimen from Corfu, Greece as lectotype (L 936.289-4), but the specimen from Dalmatia, which Kützing illustrated, should be regarded as holotype and is deposited in Herb. Sonder (MEL).
