Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota dichotoma var. intricata (C.Agardh) Greville.

Type Information
Type locality: Zara, Croatia; (De Clerck 2003: 174) Type?: (De Clerck 2003: 174) Notes: De Clerck (2003) notes that a specimen referable to D. dichotoma var. intricata, collected by Sandri and containing notes by Zanardini, is present in Herb. Sonder (MEL 537278). The specimen was used by Kützing for his description of D. ornata Zanardini ex Kützing (1859: 12, pl. 26, fig.1) which is , however, a later homonym of Dictyota ornata Zanardini ex Frauenfeld. The Frauenfeld specimen was not traced but presumably belongs to the same taxon.
