Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota fasciola (Roth) J.V.Lamouroux.

Nomenclatural note
De Clerck (2003) notes that this species occurred first as a nomen nudum in Zanardini (1843: 38) but was validly published by Kützing. The only text in Zanardini (1843: 38) refers to the habitat: "It grows on the cliffs near Sebenico where the water is brackish". - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Taxonomic note
De Clerck (2003) notes that originally this species was cosidered to be a synonym of D. dichotoma by De Toni (1895: 263) but examination of the type specimen suggested it belongs to D. fasciola. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
