The type species (neotype) of the genus Heterocapsa is Heterocapsa steinii Tillmann, Gottschling, Hoppenrath, Kusber & Elbrächter.

Type Information
Type locality: Kashiwazaki, Sea of Japan, Japan (37º26'N, 138º35'E); (Iwataki & al. 2003: 630) Holotype: Fig. 13 (epitype) (Iwataki & al. 2003: 630) Notes: Clonal cultures were established from collections made in August 1986 and May 2000. The culture isolated in 1986 is maintained in the National Institute of Environmental Studies as NIES472 strain.
