The type species (holotype) of the genus Blepharocysta is Blepharocysta splendor-maris (Ehrenberg) Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Alatosphaera hermosillae (Carbonell-Moore) Nézan, Carbonell-Moore, K.N.Mertens & Chomérat.
