The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Magnephycus engelhartii (Foslie) Athanasiadis & D.L.Ballantine.

Engelhart; 1900; no habitat data on type; TRH; B18-2607, includes slide 351; designated by Woelkerling, 1993: 230 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 351) Notes: Paratype: PC, unnumbered, Thuret-Bornet Hebarium (algal fascicle 131, filed under Lithothamnion engelhartii).
