Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Laurencia is Laurencia obtusa (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type Information
Type locality: Granville, Normandy, France; (Machin-Sánchez et al. 2014: 119) Lectotype: Lenormand; L; 0820668 (Machin-Sánchez et al. 2014: 119, fig.5) Notes: Ad oras Galliae. Spec. ded. Lenormand (Kützing 1849: 854). According to Maggs & Hommersand (1993: 405), the type locality is Cherbourg and there are syntypes at BM, LD and L. The material examined by Kützing is most likely at L and should be designated as lectotype. Lectotype: L 0820668; type locality: Granville, Normandy, France (designated by Manchin-Sánchez et al., 2014: 119, figs 2, 5). Syntypes: figs 3, 4 (Manchin-Sábchez et al., 2014).

Adjective (Latin), pyramid-shaped (Stearn 1973).
