The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cymbella is Cymbella cymbiformis C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cymbella cistula var. truncata (Rabenhorst) Brun.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), truncate, i.e., ending very abruptly as if cut straight across (Stearn 1983).
