The type species (holotype) of the genus Pterothamnion is Pterothamnion plumula (J.Ellis) Nägeli.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pterothamnion crispum (Ducluzeau) Nägeli.

Adjective (Latin), resembling fir trees (Neal 1993).
