General Environment
This is a marine species.
Description
Thallus composed of one to several erect fronds attached by a plexus of
sand-binding rhizoidal filaments. Holdfast to 3 cm diam. Fronds light green, to 40 cm
high, regularly dichotomously branched. Branching congested at base of frond, sparse
distally, resulting in long terminal internodes. Internodes terete or slightly flattened,
610 mm broad. Nodes flattened, cuneate, to 2 cm broad. Utricles produced individually
by enlargement of interutricular filaments, stoutly claviform to muffin-shaped, (180-)
200-250(-330) µm diam., (500-)600-780(-800) µm long, with truncate or depressed
apices, apical wall thin. Hairs (or hair scars) common in zone 80-100 µm below
apex of utricle. Medullary filaments 3050 m diam. Gametangia lance-ovoid, 60-80 µm
diam., 120-190 µm long, borne in zone 100-150 µm below apex.
Habitat
Growing on sandy bottoms at depths of 2030 m.
