The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fragilaria is Fragilaria pectinalis (O.F.Müller) Lyngbye.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Fragilaria pinnata f. clevei (Pantocsek) Cleve-Euler .
