The type species (lectotype) of the genus Bryopsis is Bryopsis pennata J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cladophora prolifera (Roth) Kützing.

Compound (Latin), resembling the genus Conferva.
