The type species (holotype) of the genus Melosira is Melosira nummuloides C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Aulacoseira italica var. tenuissima (Grunow) Simonsen.

Adjective (Latin), crenulate, having small rounded teeth (Stearn 1983).
