Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Digenea is Digenea simplex (Wulfen) C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Galaxaura rugosa (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

Nomenclatural note
Silva & Lipkin (2003: 380) note that "'Algues', pl. 2, fig. 3 (Fig. 7) was considered by Audouin (1826b, p. 249: 1828b, p. 86) to be a previously undescribed species of Digenea, which he named D. dichotoma, In fact, the illustrations in Savigny's Ag. 3 look exactly like thoroughly washed Galaxaura mgosa (Ellis et Solander) Lamouroux, a species that almost always is heavily silted in the field and thus does not resemble Savigny's figure. The illustrated details of the thin lateral branches also agree with those of G. rugosa." - (03 July 2017) - M.D. Guiry
