According to Babbini & Bressan (1997) this species is a synonym of Mesophyllum lichenoides (Ellis) Lemoine. According to Woelkerling (1998: 258-259), L. lichenoides is a taxonomic synonym of L. byssoides. Treated as taxonomically valid by Athanasiadis (2016: 321).
