Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Ulva is Ulva lactuca Linnaeus.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Taonia atomaria f. ciliata (C.Agardh) Nizamuddin.

Adjective (Latin), fastigiate, with branches clustered, parallel and erect, giving a narrow elongated habit (occasionally meaning branched reaching to the same height) (Stearn 1983).
