The type species (lectotype) of the genus Delesseria is Delesseria sanguinea (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Hypoglossum dendroides (Harvey) J.Agardh.

Adjective (Latin), tree-like, resembling a tree in shape (Stearn 1973).
