Status of Name

Source of Synonymy
Demes, K.W, Graham, M.H. & Suskiewicz, T.S. (2009). Phenotypic plasticity reconciles incongruous molecular and morphological taxonomies: the giant kelp, Macrocystis (Laminariales, Phaeophyceae), is a monospecific genus (note). Journal of Phycology 45(6): 1266-1269.

Type Information
Syntype localities: "Labillardière nous a enrichi de celte espèce qu'il a recueillie à la Nouvelle-Hollande; nous l'avons aussi reçue de Valparaiso" ; (Bory de Saint-Vincent 1826: 9) Lectotype (Storm Bay, Tasmania, see Ducker 1979: 20; designated by Womersley 1967: 247; Storm Bay, Tasmania): Labillardière; PC; herb. Bory (Womersley 1967: 20) Notes: "In the protologue of Macrocystis angustifolia, Bory de Saint-Vincent cited a collection from "Nouvelle Hollande" by Labillardiere, a botanist on the D'Entrecasteaux expedition, and a collection of unstated source from Valparaiso, Chile. Womersley (1967: 247) designated the Labillardiere specimen (in PC) as the lectotype, which, according to Ducker (l.c. ), came from Storm Bay, Tasmania, one of only two landfalls made by the D'Entrecasteaux expedition, the other being Esperance Bay in Western Australia." (Silva & al. 1996: 641). Macrocystis does not occur in Western Australia.
