The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus ferulaceus (Suhr ex J.Agardh) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs.

Adjective (Latin), resembling the giant fennel (genus Ferula) (Neal 1993).
