Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidium is Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pterocladiella caerulescens (Kützing) Santelices & Hommersand.

Adjective (Latin), becoming sky-blue (Stearn 1983).
