The type species (lectotype) of the genus Caulerpa is Caulerpa prolifera (Forsskål) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Caulerpa mexicana f. laxior (Weber Bosse) W.R.Taylor.

Syntype localities: Bermuda; "Indes Orientales"; (Silva & al. 1996: 826)

Adjective (Latin), with leaflets arranged on each side of a common petiole.
