Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Thalassiosira is Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii Cleve.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Thalassiosira mediterranea (Schröder) Hasle.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), stellate, with narrow divisions radiating from the center like the rays of a star (Stearn 1973).
