Type Species
This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Picomonas.

Status of Name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type Information
Type locality: "Surface water (5 m depth) from Helgoland Roads, (54°119N, 7°549E), North Sea, Germany."; (Seenivasan & al.: 14)

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Description
The oblong cells vary in length between 2.63.8 µm, their width is 22.5 µm. The longer flagellum measures 1214 µm; the shorter flagellum 79 µm. The longer (anterior) flagellum is oriented towards the anterior; the shorter (posterior) flagellum towards the posterior end of the cell. The nucleus is hemispherical, and over the spherical part of its surface is appressed to the plasma membrane. The feeding apparatus essentially consists of a basket of about 5060 parallel running fibers (30 nm repeat) of varying lengths that extend from the ventral surface where they are attached to the plasma membrane for up to 1.2 µm towards the dorsal part where they terminate. The basket is open towards the cells anterior and dorsal parts, but closed towards the posterior end of the cell. The slit-like cytostome is formed at the ventral cell surface where the side walls of the basket fibers connect to the plasma membrane and extends in the anterior-posterior direction for a length of about 1 µm, its width being about 150 nm.
